The people of Liberia depend on the tropical forest to sustain their way of life, but forests are on the decline. The president of Liberia has given timber companies logging permits to 58% of the country's primary forest (about 1/3 of the country) with most being illegal. Liberian timber can be seen around the world including China, India, Russia and France. Although there is now a moratorium on logging, there have been no penalties for the issuance of illegal permits and no permits have been aborted. As it is now, ordinary Liberians are reaping few benefits from the logging activities.
