Carbon credits from Northeastern Madagascar have now been certified for sale on the voluntary carbon market. The Wildlife Conservation Society , the main organizer of the REDD+ project helped to protect approximately 400,000 hectares of endangered rainforest from destruction. The area is prone to illegal logging which has only accelerated after the 2009 coup that took out Madagascar's democratically elected president. Protecting this area can reduce annual emissions equivalent to the US state of Montana. Along with reduced emissions, 50% of carbon credit sales will go directly to local infrastructure and help protect more than a dozen at-risk species.
