Special Topic: Nelson Mandela, Reviewing his era and the present days

The death of Nelson Mandela made us look back on our experiences in Apartheid era, Anti-Apartheid movements, birth of democratic South Africa, AIDS crisis in South Africa and so on. His death also gave us an opportunity to look at the world from a different perspective, that is, a world without Mandela. pp.23-25 "Nelson Mandela in the Japanese Journals"
Publisher Seidosha issued a special issue of monthly "Gendai-Shiso (Review of Contemporary Philosophy)" on Nelson Mandela, which had four pieces of Mandela’s writings and 26 articles by various writers. This issue of "Africa NOW" focuses on 5 articles by AJF's members. The current issue of web-magazine "Africa Report" by Institute of Developing Economies has 5 articles on Nelson Mandela and his era. The authors are MAKINO Kumiko, ABE Toshihiro, HIRANO Katsumi, SATO Chizuko, and MINE Yoichi.

pp.26-28 Interview with SUENAGA Jyunpei "9 months learning at National University of Lesotho"
SUENAGA Jyunpei, a student of Tokyo University of Foreign Affairs, became the first Japanese who studied at National University of Lesotho (NUL) in 2012. He spoke of 9 months at NUL in vivid detail for 2 hours. You would be interested in NUL and Lesotho.

pp.29-35 "Learning and working in Tanzania" by WADA Natsuki
WADA Natsuki wrote of her experiences in Tanzania as a volunteer, a student and a staff taking care of "Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects" of Japanese Embassy in Tanzania. In her first year in University, she went to Tanzania as a participant in a work-camp and made friends with a boy with diabetes. She recalls the memory of a girl with diabetes in her primary school time. As a student of University of Dar es Salaam, she met students’ demonstration to demand increase of student loan in the campus. At first she was amused by the demonstrations. One day, however, a group of students who had discontent with the increase in price of foods attacked and destroyed a kiosk on campus. It was a familiar place for her, so she felt disappointed at students’ demonstrations. Last year she found a place to stay in Tanzania as a worker. Her advises on finding a job in Tanzania would be useful.
